Digital Divide

Jon Carroll says…

You want a real measure of the digital divide? According to the BBC, 80 percent of the people in the world have never heard a dial tone.

Okay fine. But where is Mark Morford, modeling an orange jump suit in Gtmo for his recent take on Gay Marriage maybe?

Actually, that was a 1999 BBC report that said 80% of the world had never heard dial tone. Shocing to some, but think about where the population density is and the nations that don’t have a rural telephone infrastructure.

I think I heard recently that current estimates are about 65% of the world population has never used a telephone. I used to pay better attention to tha tsort of trivia.

I thought they’d never heard dial-tone because they were all VoIP users.
